A Mostly-Online Bachelor's Degree for ASL English Interpreter Candidates
The University of Northern Colorado Distance Opportunities for Interpreter Training (DO IT) Center offers the American Sign Language – English Interpretation BA degree program with online delivery during the Fall and Spring academic semesters plus summer on-campus requirements in Greeley, Colorado. This bachelor's degree is a comprehensive 4-year program, but existing coursework may be transferred in towards degree requirements.
The ASL – English Interpretation Bachelor of Arts degree
- Has a nationally-recognized instructional staff that includes both deaf and hearing members.
- Is based on state-of-the-art curricula designed with input from national experts.
- Addresses the five domains of competency necessary to become a competent and autonomous practitioner.
- Prepares graduates to confidently approach the national evaluation system within approximately 12 months of program completion.
The American Sign Language – English Interpretation BA distance program, offered by the UNC DO IT Center through the Office of Extended Studies, begins each Summer term. Students will be admitted once a year via a competitive admission process, and class size is limited. Applications must be received by January 15 each year.
Preparing Autonomous Practitioners Nationwide
The ASL – English Interpretation program is unique in two primary ways:
- This program is designed to prepare confident interpreter candidates to achieve national certification and to enter the profession as competent, autonomous practitioners based on the newest research available—with input from multiple expert sources.
- It has been designed for distance delivery to impact the national need for highly qualified ASL-English interpreters.

Applicants must have completed ASL 1-4 or be in progress of completing ASL 4 when applying.
ASL 3 and 4 will be offered this summer Online or at the Denver Center at Lowry.

Course of Study
The ASL – English Interpretation BA is a 120 hour program built as an integrated curriculum. It includes
- 40 semester hours of UNC Liberal Arts Core requirements
- 62 semester hours in the Interpreting Major (INTR courses)
- 18 semester hours in an emphasis area (INTR courses); emphasis choices are Community Interpreting, Educational Interpreting; Legal Interpreting; or (with advisement) a student-created Generalist Interpreter emphasis
A one-month online orientation course is required of all students in the program. A grade of B or better is required in each course to remain in the program.
Online + Summer Greeley Experiences
The courses in this program are completely online during the Fall and Spring academic semesters. There are three designed summer sessions included in this program. The number of summers you will personally be involved in is dependent on the number of credit hours that are transferred, your ASL competencies, and where you are placed within the program sequence. These summer courses focus on language and interpreting coursework.
