The ASL – English Interpretation BA is a 120 hour program built as an integrated curriculum. It includes

• 40 semester hours of UNC Liberal Arts Core requirements
• 62 semester hours in the Interpreting Major (INTR courses)
• 18 semester hours in an emphasis area (INTR courses); emphasis choices are Community Interpreting, Educational Interpreting; Legal Interpreting; or (with advisement) a student-created Generalist Interpreter emphasis

A one-month online orientation course is required of all students in the program. A grade of B or better is required in each course to remain in the program.

Online + Summer Greeley Experiences

The courses in this program are completely online during the Fall and Spring academic semesters. There are three designed summer sessions included in this program. The number of summers you will personally be involved in is dependent on the number of credit hours that are transferred, your ASL competencies, and where you are placed within the program sequence. These summer courses focus on language and interpreting coursework.

Admission Requirements

• You must meet the UNC undergraduate admission requirements for the academic year for which you are applying. See the UNC Catalog for current admission requirements.
• 2 years of ASL as a foreign language in high school or 2 years ASL (4 classes; ASL 1-4) on a college transcript and/or life experience
  (A Deaf culture course may also be helpful depending on how your ASL competencies are acquired.)
  • Please note: UNC offers ASL 1-4 either online or face to face.
  • ASL 3 and 4 offered this summer: Online and at the Denver Center at Lowry
• Completion of the DO IT Center application materials.

Eligibility by State

UNC has secured approval from almost every state, as required by new federal regulations, so that students are eligible to apply to online programs at UNC. However we are unable to accept applications at this time for our online programs from students residing in a few select states because their requirements, particularly application fees, for such approval are prohibitive. Please verify your Eligibility by State before applying.

Note: All international students residing outside of the United States are eligible to apply to our online programs. Students attending online while residing outside of the United States do not need student visas for admission.

Transferring Credit

You may transfer in to UNC:

• Up to 90 college credit hours with a 2.4 cumulative GPA from all higher education institutions attended.
• Credits in courses comparable to those at UNC earned at a regionally-accredited institution with a grade of C or better will be considered for transfer.
• Review process: official transcripts are reviewed by both UNC Admissions and UNC DO IT Center BA program staff. The Center’s review will specifically target ASL and interpreting credit on transcript. A transcript review will be sent to you at the end of that process.
  
• Transfer students are advised on placement in the 120 credit hour program following a transcript review and demonstration of ASL competency.
  
• Where you are placed in the program, as well as what courses you transfer, will impact the number of credits you take each semester.
• UNC accepts an Associates of Arts (AA), waiving all liberal arts core coursework. AAS and AGS do not transfer as a “degree;" UNC will review the transcript and each credit will be considered.

Tuition

This program is offered through the UNC Office of Extended Studies, which means a flat per-credit tuition rate for all students in the program. There are no student fees. Certain courses may carry specific course fees for additional services and materials.

Tuition rates are set each academic year (which begin each Fall semester). The tuition rate for the 2012-13 school year for this program is $360 per credit hour.

Financial Aid

DO IT Center OSEP Scholarships
The UNC Distance Opportunities for Interpreter Training Center was awarded a 4-year grant (2010-2014) from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs to sponsor 28 students in the program who agree to provide a 4-year service obligation. Federal Financial Aid
Students who cannot pay for tuition alone are encouraged to apply for federal financial aid. Students must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA priority filing date for each academic year (which begins each August) is March 1. Late submissions of the FAFSA are still accepted but may not be considered for the maximum amount of aid.

Bachelor’s students require enrollment in a minimum of 6 credits per academic term for financial aid eligibility. Full time enrollment is based on 12 credits.

The American Sign Language – English Interpretation BA distance program, offered by the UNC DO IT Center through the Office of Extended Studies, begins each Summer term. Students will be admitted once a year via a competitive admission process, and class size is limited. Applications must be received by January 15 each year.
